A child choking to death is a constant fear for most parents. Once a child gets to crawling age it seems that there is nothing that it will not put in its mouth. Keeping children out of harms way is literally a full-time job and just a second of not paying attention can result in serious injury or death to a child.
Choking is one of the most common forms of death for young children. There are so many potential hazards and what often seems like so little regulation.
Foods as Choking Hazards
Many products that may cause choking in children will contain warning labels to make parents aware that this is a possible threat, Morticia addams costume but food bought at the grocery store contains no warning. It is up to the parent to decide how to safely feed their children.
A first step parents should take before their children consume any type of food is to cut it into small pieces. These pieces should be so small that they will not get caught in a child's esophagus even if they are swallowed completely whole. But there are foods that are unsafe no matter how small. These foods include:
o Hot dogs
o Nuts and seeds
o Chunks of meat and cheese
o Whole grapes
o Candy that is hard, gooey or sticky
o Popcorn
o Chunks of peanut butter
o Raw vegetables
o Fruit chunks such as apples or bananas
o Chewing gum
Many foods are dangerous because of their consistency. For instance, peanut butter or bananas can accumulate and get stuck in a wind pipe. Parents should consider consistency and size when feeding children.
Toys and Household Items
The Consumer Product Safety Commission or CSPSC tries to oversee the safety of products that are released for the public to buy, but the enormous volume of products that come onto the market every month make complete safety impossible.
The CPSC misses issues with products all the time and then calls for nationwide recalls of the dangerous products. Other products are required to have labeling warning of choking hazards for young children. Many of these warning must dictate what age child the toy is aimed at.
It is important that parents make judgment calls on certain toys even if they are on the market. The CPSC will usually not recall a product until multiple accidents have occurred.
